PHILADELPHIA – In a motion brought forward during the Third Convention Session by Bro. Annika Gates (Rho Gamma ’21), seconded by Bro. Austin Freedman (Kappa Beta ’22), the 2021 National Convention of Theta Tau has acted to change instances of the term “Colony” to “Candidate Chapter” wherever applicable, including but not limited to the Ritual of Theta Tau, Constitution of Theta Tau, and Policies & Procedures Manual.

Bro. Raven Smith (Kappa Gamma, ’15) moderated a committee of students and National Officers to brainstorm possible alternatives. After considering several possible terms, the title of “candidate chapter” was settled on by the committee. The quote below captures her thoughts from these conversations as well as the intention behind this important shift in terminology.

The history of colonization and imperialism across the globe is a painful one that has no place in our modern institutions. As we strive toward a more equitable and inclusive Theta Tau, it is imperative that we identify harmful and archaic practices that neither further our mission nor exemplify our values. Reforming our language and traditions is a necessary step toward reforming our mindset and culture, and this legislation marks the latest progress on this long journey.

– Council Delegate & DEI Committee Chair Raven Smith

The Executive Council, the National Officer Corps, and the Central Office are working to deploy this change in terminology as efficiently as possible.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column] [/et_pb_row] [/et_pb_section]
