As our brothers prepare for this year’s celebrations, we want to offer a reminder of something scarier than ghosts or ghouls: an embarrassing Halloween costume. Eek!

Cultural Appropriation is something we expect our members to avoid when dressing up in costume! If your costume evokes a stereotype, generalizes a group of people based on race or some other characteristic, or would be considered offensive to someone on the outside, we advise you to find something else to wear for your spooky celebrations.

There are several excellent reasons to avoid offensive Halloween costumes!

  • You could damage both your character, and the fraternity’s reputation as a professional organization.
  • You could damage your relationships with your brothers who’s culture you may be harmfully stereotyping.
  • There are so many fun costumes that are not offensive!

Here are some fun costumes that I suggest:

  • Moo Deng (Hippo Onesie) and/or Pesto (Penguin Onesie)
  • Spiderman
  • Chappell Roan (your favorite artist’s favorite artist)
  • Business man
  • Vampire

We hope you represent our organization well this Halloween, respectful of the growing diversity of our fraternity.
